ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY


The Research Group on Childhood, Art, Educational and Psychosocial Practices (GIAPE) is linked to the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), which is a public institution of Higher Education linked to the Ministry of Education of Brazil (MEC). UFSCar has 4 campuses located in the State of São Paulo, in the cities of São Carlos, Araras, Sorocaba and Buri. It was established as a Foundation by Decree nº 62.758, of May 22, 1968, and began its teaching activities in 1970.

  


UFSCar stands out for the high level of academic qualification of its faculty and, over the years of its existence, it has become one of the most recognized institutions of Higher Education in Brazil and Latin America. It offers free, quality public education to around 18.000 graduate and postgraduate students.

 


The main campus, located in the city of São Carlos, has an area of 645 hectares and has 39 undergraduate courses, 33 academic departments and 37 postgraduate programs.

 


The campus in the city of Araras has a unit of 302.8 hectares in the municipality of Valparaíso and its Center for Agricultural Sciences (CCA), with 44,000 m² of built area, consists of 05 academic departments responsible for 06 undergraduate courses and 02 postgraduate courses.

 

The newest campus was opened in 2011. It is located in the municipality of Buri and has 9,947.15 m2 of built area. It currently offers 05 undergraduate courses.

 


The Sorocaba campus, on which GIAPE carries out its activities, was created in March 2005. It is installed on a land of 700,000 m² (70 hectares) and 48,000 m² of built area. It has 02 buildings for theoretical classes, 62 laboratories, 03 auditoriums, library, university restaurant, cafeteria, clinic, sports court and athletics track. It has 185 professors on a full-time basis and 110 technical-administrative servers.

 


Currently, the Sorocaba campus has 03 academic centers – Center for Science and Technology for Sustainability (CCTS), Center for Human and Biological Sciences (CCHB) and Center for Science in Management and Technology (CCGT) ─ which offer 14 undergraduate courses. 10 postgraduate programs and more than 1.000 extension activities in different areas of knowledge for approximately 3.000 students.

 


The occupation of the land and activities in general are guided by principles of sustainability and environmental preservation, which helps to compose a landscape of great beauty and tranquility for carrying out the various academic activities.
